How to heal your relationship to your periods

Your period is a natural and healthy part of being a woman. It's a time for your body to shed its lining and prepare for a new cycle. But for many women, menstruation is shrouded in shame and secrecy. We're taught that our periods are something to be hidden and endured.

This negative relationship with our periods can have a significant impact on our physical and emotional health. It can lead to menstrual cramps, bloating, mood swings, and other symptoms. It can also make us feel disconnected from our bodies and our feminine essence.

For many years, I had a very negative relationship with my period. I used to suffer from severe cramps that would leave me bedridden for days. So if that's where you're currently at - I feel you.

But it doesn't have to stay that way. Things changed for me when I started to learn more about the menstrual cycle, the inner seasons and began tapping into my feminine wisdom. I realised that my period is a powerful time of self-reflection and transformation. I began to see my menstrual cycle as a gift, and an opportunity to connect with my body. I started to track my cycle and listen to my body's needs. I learned to honour my needs and to take care of myself during each phase of my cycle. I also began to practice womb yoga and meditation.

I am now grateful for my period. I see it as a time of power and renewal. I am no longer disconnected from my body or its natural functions and I feel comfortable and safe in my body.

Here are some of the specific things that helped me to heal my relationship with my period, that can support you too:

  • Track your cycle. This will help you to learn more about your body's natural rhythms and identify any patterns or irregularities.

  • Listen to your body. Pay attention to what you need during each phase of your cycle. Do you need more rest? More nourishing foods? More time for relaxation?

  • Honour your needs. Set aside time each day to do something that makes you feel good. This could be anything from taking a hot bath to reading a book to spending time in nature.

  • Connect with your womb. This could involve practicing womb yoga, meditation, or simply placing your hands on your womb and taking some deep breaths. You can do yoga with me online if you'd like to explore these types of practices

  • Explore negative beliefs and assumptions. Take some time to journal about your relationship to your menstrual cycle. What limiting beliefs have you picked up and what positive belief can you replace them with?

  • Create a supportive community. Surrounding yourself with other women who are also on a journey of healing their relationship with their periods can be incredibly supportive and empowering. If you're local to me you can attend one of my events to connect with other women on this journey.

If you are struggling to heal your relationship with your period, I encourage you to try these tips. It may take some time and effort, but it is definitely possible to create a more positive and loving relationship with your body and your menstrual cycle.

Remember, you are not alone. Many women struggle with their periods. But there is hope. With time and effort, you can heal your relationship with your period and learn to see it as a gift.
